BIKING IN RILA
The south-western part of Bulgaria is a land of mountains – a rolling sea of independent massifs separated from one to another by deep cut gorges and high passes. Most of the towns and villages lie down in the valleys or on the lower slopes, leaving the ancient forests, high alpine meadows and rugged rock for a variety of rare and endangered wildlife. This is where Rila Mountains rises and rises high – it is the highest mountain range in Southeast Europe! It is a National Park and also a PAN Park.
Here we will bike in alpine regions, discover stunning landscapes and even cross the whole Rila Mountains.
The first two nights are spend in the village of Govedartsi on foot of the Rila Mountains. Our family-run guesthouse is the ideal base for our first biking routes – to get our legs “warm” for the next days. On the third day we bike to hut Zavrachitsa and will overnight there – at a height of some 2200 m! We continue on the famous Kaiser Road (constructed by Bulgaria’s former kings back in the beginning of the 20th century). This Kaiser Road crosses the whole Rila Mountains – a truly spectacular road and a great human achievement. Most parts of the road are now challenging single trails – be prepared! The downhill to Treshtenik is amazing. From Treshtenik we bike in South Rila Mountains. Our last night is in the village of Gorno Draglishte where hospitality is on top of the list. With our hosts we enjoy a lovely time, taste home made food and their grape brandy.
On our last day we drive back to Sofia. We stop en route to see the great Rila Monastery – Bulgaria’s biggest monastery. Finally a 2-hour transfer brings us to Sofia.
